The Sharks pick up a point from Little Caesars Arena. The San Jose Sharks fell 3-2 in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings in their second and final meeting of the season on Jan. 24 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
The first period went scoreless, but the second period saw both teams score two goals, starting off with Adam Erne for the Red Wings at 2:17. Timo Meier scored his 28th of the year less than six minutes later. Michael Rasmussen put Detroit ahead 2-1 at 16:29, and Logan Couture scored San Jose’s final goal of the night, his 17th, with just seven seconds left in the second period.

The third period was another scoreless affair, and Detroit’s Andrew Copp scored his fifth goal of the season 25 seconds into overtime to sink San Jose.

At least we won’t have to watch the Bruins for the rest of the season, right? The Boston Bruins beat the San Jose Sharks down easily during Team Teal’s annual trip to TD Garden. That’s not to say that nothing interesting happened, though. Just 27 seconds into the game, Timo Meier dropped the gloves with Brandon Carlo, setting up the power forward nicely to go for a potential Gordie Howe hat trick.
Unfortunately, that never came to fruition. The Bruins started scoring fairly early, notching the first goal of the night at 7:16 in the first period. The goal marked Hampus Lindholm’s sixth of the season.
The second period went much like the first, as San Jose put up just five shots on goal in each of the first two periods. Boston, however, added two more goals to their tally in the first 10 minutes of the middle frame. Charlie McAvoy notched his fourth of the year and Nick Foligno snagged his seventh.

It’s #TeamTank’s latest hit single. Back-to-back 5-3 finals saw the San Jose Sharks on the short-end of the stick against the Columbus Blue Jackets in what was probably the most winnable game during this road trip. Johnny Gaudreau and Patrik Laine reunited on the first line, with Gaudreau and Laine combining for a goal and an assist each to fuel the Jackets’ comeback victory.
Gustav Nyquist had himself a two-point night and eventually scored the game winner. The Blue Jackets’ youth showed up as well, with University of Michigan converts Nick Blankenburg and Kent Johnson both notching two assists on the night.
Joonas Korpisalo took the goaltending spotlight for Columbus in the win, limiting the Sharks’ 15 shots in the first period to two goals. The Sharks put fewer shots on goal in the following periods combined, allowing Korpisalo to finish the night with a .920 save percentage (SV%) and 23 saves on 25 total shots. Losing (against New Jersey) is like the sun going down on me. The San Jose Sharks suffered another heartbreaker on MLK Day at SAP Center. This one came as a 4-3 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils in a hard-fought, but ultimately frustrating game.
Coming into the day’s game, New Jersey presented an excellent challenge for San Jose, who were looking to redeem themselves after a miserable 7-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. The Devils, the youngest team in the NHL with an already incredible road record, seemed like a good test for the Sharks’ resolve. Of note, Kevin Labanc was a healthy scratch, replaced by Noah Gregor.
A mere 29 seconds in, the game featured a nightmare start reminiscent of the game against the Calgary Flames last month. Starting in his own defensive zone with a blocked shot on an attempt by Erik Karlsson, Swiss star Nico Hischier carried the puck to lead an offensive rush that led to a goal from defender Ryan Collapse

Happy birthday, Connor. You’re welcome. XOXO, San Jose. The NHL’s leading scorer and the Edmonton Oilers had it every which way against the at-home San Jose Sharks. Notably, the powerhouse squad from Alberta had a monster middle period, with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all posting a goal and an assist. The feat increased the Oilers’ lead to 5-0, arguably putting the game out of reach even before the final frame. McDavid scored the first goal of the night and Klim Kostin added a tally of his own in the first period of play.
The Sharks could have salvaged some dignity in the third, but the Oilers weren’t done yet. Jesse Puljujarvi notched a goal with the help of Nugent-Hopkins again — bringing him on par with birthday boy McDavid and Draisaitl for three points each on the night. Then Ryan McLeod added a goal less than a minute later for good measure.

The Edmonton Oilers (22-18-3, fourth Pacific) roll into the Bay Area for the first time this season for a rare Friday night tilt against the San Jose Sharks (13-22-8, seventh Pacific). It’s hard to believe, but with half of the schedule left on the books, this is the first time the two Pacific Division foes will meet.
There are very few players in the league with better numbers than Erik Karlsson, but the Oilers have two of them — Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. McDavid leads the league with 79 points (35 goals, 44 assists), meanwhile, Draisaitl is second with 63 points (23 goals, 40 assists). Weatherby played 50 games with the Sharks last season, tallying 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists). He impressed Bob Boughner’s coaching staff enough to make the team out of training camp, but then floundered as the 2021-22 season progressed. Weatherby was relegated to the San Jose Barracuda at the start of this season and has not received a call-up since. He has notched 3 goals and 3 assists in 39 games in the AHL this season, as well as 39 penalty minutes.

Is it best to order ahead, or just walk in and see what they have? The San Jose Sharks (14-25-9, seventh Pacific) continue the road trip, heading to Hockeytown to take on the Detroit Red Wings (19-18-8, sixth Atlantic). These two teams played on Nov. 17 in San Jose in a back-and-forth affair until the Red Wings were able to score four goals in the third period to win 7-4. Erik Karlsson logged one of four of his 4-point games that night, notching a goal and three assists as the Sharks stormed back from a 4-2 deficit, falling short of pulling out a win.
Since then, the Red Wings have seen the season turn downward with a six-game losing streak right before Christmas. Detroit has hit a “soft” part of the schedule right now, but aren’t taking advantage of the opportunities, dropping games to the Arizona Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers — all teams below Detroit in the Bedard Standings.

This is the first meeting this season between San Jose, 28th overall in the league, and Columbus, who are currently on a 3-15-0 skid and became the NHL’s bottom team after a Jan. 19 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
The Blue Jackets missed the 2022 playoffs and earned the sixth-overall draft selection. The off-season showed promise in free agency, when general manager Jarmo Kekalainen signed defender Erik Gudbranson and star forward Johnny Gaudreau from the Calgary Flames. In order to resign Patrik Laine, however, the team was forced to trade Oliver Bjorkstrand to the Seattle Kraken. Finally, Alexandre Texier left the team for personal reasons.

The last time these two teams met, the Sharks had yet to win a game in regulation, and many hoped a trip to Jersey would be their first. That elusive regulation win wouldn’t come until the following game against the Philadelphia Flyers, as San Jose dropped a tight 2-1 game in Jersey.
In the three months since these teams last met, the Devils have been through a fair few ups and downs. You never forget your first time in ... Tempe? The San Jose Sharks kicked off the second half of the 2022-23 season at the smallest arena in the NHL, Arizona State University’s Mullett Arena, the Tempe home of the Arizona Coyotes.

The Sharks are going back to college. The San Jose Sharks (12-21-8, seventh Pacific) make the first visit to Mullett Arena, where the team will face the Arizona Coyotes (13-21-5, seventh Central). These two teams last played each other on Dec. 13. San Jose squeaked out a 3-2 victory, thanks to goals from Tomas Hertl, Nick Bonino and Nico Sturm, while James Reimer stopped 20 of 22 shots to hold onto a lead in the third period.
Arizona is coming off a 4-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night to kick off a three-game homestand. The Desert Dogs got on the board first, but proceeded to give up four straight goals on the way to a fifth straight loss. Barret Hayton opened scoring and Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves on 27 shots, but the ‘Yotes couldn’t slow down Sidney Crosby, who assisted on both of Jake Guentzel’s goals.
The Sharks hung around with arguably the best team in the NHL, the Boston Bruins, on Saturday night. Special Collapse
